Characteristics of a good parent

With so many parenting styles, and no right way to do something, what really makes a good parent? Talk to any parent in the world, and they are a phenomenal parent. Their method is the best, and no other method can top it.

The characteristics of a good parent vary from parent to parent and child to child. As you know, no child is the same, as is no parent. One of the best characteristics a good parent can have is the ability to realize that their way is not always the right way. The ability to admit when they are wrong, or when something doesn't work takes a strong parent. You will do your child a favor if you realize this sooner rather than later. If something isn't working for you and your child, re-evaluate. Continuing to force something upon your child will only leave you feeling frustrated along with the child. Talk with your child and find out why something isn't working, and come to a solution together. This allows the child to feel involved in the day to day ongoings of the family unit.

Learning to laugh at yourself is another quality found in great parents. The baby learned to take her diaper off, and it was a messy one. There is feces everywhere, all over the wall, the crib, the floor, and your precious little one. At first, you are furious. Furious at yourself for not checking on her quickly enough, furious for not putting pants on her and letting her sleep in just a diaper, furious at her for smearing it everywhere. Take a step back and laugh. It's not her fault, and it's not your fault. Yes, you have one huge mess to clean up, but it's a story you can share with her later in life. If you can laugh at yourself just once a day, you are doing great!

Give your child your undivided attention at least 15 minutes a day. Remind them everyday how important they are by letting them pick an activity and spend that time with them. Ignore the emails and the phone calls, turn off the television, and just enjoy your child.

Show affection outwardly. Tell your child you love them everyday, and be affectionate with your spouse. It doesn't have to be an all out grope session, just a simple kiss and hug and I love you will show your child that you do care for those around you.

Allow your child to explore the world around them. This will result in messes, sometimes tears, but more often laughter. Don't allow yourself to do everything for your child, they need to learn to do it for themselves. There may be spaghetti on the floor/wall/highchair/baby, but she's learning to feed herself! Messes happen, they can be cleaned. Laughter is all too rare in today's society.
