Magnets come in all sorts of styles, colors and fun designs. Just about everyone loves magnets. These nifty little trinkets are plastered all over refrigerators in homes everywhere and may occasionally even be found in school classrooms and personal offices. Magnets not only add fun and whimsical decor to the room, but may hold a favorite photograph or hold that A+ little Susy got on her last spelling test securely to the fridge for all to see. Magnets can be of a generic, common place variety or as unique as each individual who owns them. One way to ensure that your magnets are among the most original and unique is to make your own. This is a fun and easy craft that anyone can master. Below are the instructions for a couple different fun magnet projects.
Decoupage magnets: For these magnets you will need, clear glass half marbles, glass cleaner, lint free cloth, decoupage medium, scissors, variety of gift wrap or other decorated paper, paint brushes, glue and small plain magnets (make sure that your magnets are not bigger then your marbles).
Using the lint free cloth and glass cleaner, clean the flat side of each half marble. Then cut 2 x 2 inch squares from the decorated papers, one for each half marble. Next apply an even coat of decoupage medium to the flat side of one of the half marbles. Be careful not to use to much, a thin layer is all that is needed. Immediately after applying the decoupage medium to the marble, place the marble, with the flat side down, onto the center of one of the square pieces of decorated paper. Make sure the decorated side of the paper is facing up, so that the decoration shows through the other side of the marble. Lift the marble and squeeze the paper and marble together to ensure even distribution of the decoupage medium. Do this same process over again for each half marble then set them aside and allow them to dry.
After the marbles have dried, cut away the excess paper from each of them so that no paper peeks out from the edges of the marbles. Then paint another thin layer of decoupage medium over the backs of the papers on each and allow to dry again. Finally, using a small bit of glue, adhere the small magnets to the backs of each of the marbles. Squeeze the magnet and marble together until the glue bonds. Let the magnets dry.
Butterfly Magnets: For these magnets you will need, empty 2 liter bottles, butterfly pattern, scissors, black marker paint, fabric paint, stain glass paint, glue, small round magnets and powdered glitter.
