Lighthouses of the United States

Barnegat Lighthouse, New Jersey

"Old Barney" shines again! In honor of its 150th birthday, Barnegat Lighthouse was refitted with a Coast Guard-approved lens, visible for 22 miles. The structure is one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the United States, as well as being one of the tallest at 172 feet. Nevertheless, a visit to Barnegat Light State Park comprises more than hiking 217 steps to take in a view of the ocean's ship traffic or Atlantic City casinos on the horizon.

Barnegat Light State Park houses an interpretive center next to the lighthouse. Visitors can learn about the history of the light, the natural changes in the area, and fight against erosion by the local community and government. Many photographs illustrate the history of Barnegat Lighthouse and the natural changes in the area. People do not have to climb to the 165-foot tall light to see the panoramic views. The interpretive center displays live images transmitted from four cameras.

The park also has several picnic tables positioned along the inlet, providing a great view of both commercial fishing vessels and recreational boaters navigating the swift currents. People with disabilities can easily access the picnic areas.

A 1,033-foot concrete walkway with handrails provides accessible fishing, as well as a safe walkway for families on the jetty. Year-round anglers can also try their hand at catching dinner along the picnic area bulkhead, although fall is the best time of year to be successful. Whether playing in the sand or sunbathing, both kids and adults can enjoy the sandy area next to the jetty. Beach wheelchairs are available.

Barnegat Light State Park is home to one of the last areas of maritime forest on Long Beach Island. A 1/5 mile long trail loops through American Holly, Black Cherry, Eastern Red Cedar and Sassafras trees. This small forest attracts migratory birds on the long journey to and from their breeding sites, primarily in May and October. The park is also a great place to observe several species of waterfowl during the winter. Fortunate visitors may be able to see a Harbor Seal taking a sunbath on the jetty in winter.

The state park sponsors several free programs during the year, including waterfowl viewing programs in winter. Group tours are educational and fun.

*History*

Barnegat (Barendegat) is Dutch for "breakers' inlet". Henry Hudson first sighted Barnegat Inlet in 1609. The Atlantic Ocean around the inlet has claimed over 200 sailing ships, due to treacherous
