Favorite fictional characters

Choosing a favorite fictional character is not an easy task. As an avid reader and movie watcher, as well as a former television addict, I have had a multitude of favorites over the years that range from the funniest and most ridiculous, to the ones that make me cry every time I read about them or see them on screen. To narrow the "favorite" down to one, or even two, would be impossible, so I have chosen one from each medium.

Reading is my passion, and I have come across so many wonderful literary characters in the years since I read my first novel. Elizabeth Bennett, Jo March, and Hester Prynn were the characters that made me fall in love with the classics, and Frodo Baggins and Harry Potter made me believe in fantasy.

However, my favorite literary, fictional character does not come from one of the great classic novels of all time, but instead from a contemporary, laugh out loud series of books written by Janet Evanovich called the Stephanie Plum series. Stephanie's on again, off again boyfriend, Joe Morelli, is the cream of of the crop when it comes to fictional hotties. Joe, unlike the main character, Stephanie Plum, has a depth of character that keeps getting better and more enjoyable with each book. He's sexy, funny, smart, tough but tender, romantic, and strong, both physically and emotionally. Joe gives the single woman hope that a man really can have it all and still be a great guy. Joe comes to life thanks to the excellent writing of Evanovich. Now if only Stephanie could evolve as Joe has.

I have so many favorite fictional movie characters, that narrowing it down to just one is a challenge. Sister Luke, Bridget Jones, Galadriel, and Maria Von Trapp all come to mind, but again, I have to go the comedic route, because there is nothing I love more than laughter and no one does rip roaring laughter better than Kevin Smith and the fabulous comedic team of Jay and Silent Bob. First of all, it takes real talent to be able to make someone laugh just by doing nothing, which is exactly what "silent" Bob does. His sidekick Jay, though, is the one who really steals the show. He may have the most vulgar mouth and vocabulary of anyone ever to grace (and I say that very loosely) a movie screen, but he never fails to have me rolling in the aisles laughing until my sides hurt.

It has been about three years since I have stopped watching television, and the main reason for this was that two of my favorite shows were cancelled at the same time and nothing since has been able to replace them for me. I loved both of these shows so much that I can't even choose between them when choosing my favorite characters, so for my favorite TV fictional characters I choose both Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City and Rachel Green from Friends. Both ladies have style, charm, wit, and a warmth about them that made me want to be their friends. I was disappointed enough when both shows ended that my interest in television went right out the window, along with my favorite ladies. I really enjoyed the Sex and the City movie, despite its blah reviews and hope the rumors about a Friends movie are true.

With such talented writers in every medium, it's a daunting task to choose or even narrow down a list of favorite fictional characters. Those I named, although at the top of my list, are far from my only favorites. At times I wonder if the newest batch of screenwriters and authors can keep up with the seasoned vets and am always excited when I fall in love with a new fictional character, as it means the talent is still out there and in abundance.
