Practicing Christianity

by Stacie

At age 35, I am at a stage of evaluation - evaluating the last decade of my spiritual endeavors. Over the years, I have read various books on spiritual guidance, healing, doctrines and self-help. I have watched and listened to diverse preachers on television and radio. I have visited different church denominations, but yet, I still find imperfections within, like everyone else. One thing I know is certain, as I struggle with my imperfections, I am certain that my relationship with God is not forsaken.

I have discovered with my past failures to be perfect under God that there becomes a duty when one "practices" Christianity as a daily ritual. Jesus had concerns with "practicing religion" when addressing the Pharisees in the Book of Matthew (See Matthew 23). Jesus called them hypocrites. The Holy Spirit renews and changes us continually and without relying on the Holy Spirit for direction and renewal, we become stale. Not many people can change habits and beliefs overnight. Only God can change us in his timing. Trying to practice perfection every day in our flesh becomes bondage to a degree.

I am reminded of an experience I encountered while visiting a Pentecostal Church wherein the Pastor suddenly became intrigued with my spiritual stage or walk in Christ. This Pastor sought confirmation that I was walking perfectly in Christ. That Church preached and practiced holiness at every service. So I thought, what about the "new" Christians who were still dealing with sin in their lives after conversion? Could they change their sinful ways overnight to please the "so-called" perfect Christian or Pastor? I conclude, absolutely not unless God delivered them overnight. A lot of Christians forget this truth.

When God changes our hearts, practicing Christianity is not a thought or action, but a true change that comes natural. So as we slowly grow in Christ, He continues to teach us as we learn to rely on Him for His strength and wisdom. It is our will and dedication to God that will honor Him and He will then perfect us without having to practice a so-called religion He often preached against.

Christianity to me is seeking God, learning the Word of God and obeying His commandments. We, as sinners, will fall short but we must remember that God is the only one we have to answer to. Each day is a new day in Christ and when we seek Him, He will direct our paths and fill us with His great peace.
