The strategy for gift shopping is the same, regardless of whether you are buying for a four pawed pal or a two footed friend. In order to find the ideal gift, you have to put yourself in the recipient's place and think about what kind of things are sure to please. A great gift for a dog isn't necessarily the most stylish or expensive thing at the pet store; after all, if you are looking at colors or price tags, you are not thinking like a canine. Also, like people, dogs are individuals, and the gift that makes one tail way my have another dog during up his wet little nose. With those things in mind, here are a few ideas for finding the ideal gift for a dog:

1. Avoid embarrassing and/or uncomfortable outfits.

Some dogs really do need to be kept warm in the winter, but no dog needs to be seen in a skimpy pink dress. The process of putting on fancy outfits can be uncomfortable for your dog, and wearning them in warm weather will definitely make your dog unhappy. If your dog does need weather protection, by a simple, warm sweater or jacket that will be easy to wash and easy to put on.

2. Understand that toys will get chewed.

Buying expensive, cute stuffed animals for your pet will usually be an exercise in disappointment. Dogs love to chew, so get them toys that are simple, durable, and intended to take some tooth action. Rope toys, balls, and rawhide bones are all canine classics that will give your dog plenty of fun times.

3. Make food fun.

Some toys like the Buster Cube or the Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball can be filled with treats or even your dog's regular food. When the dog hits the toy with a paw or rolls it with his nose, treats or kibble will fall out onto the floor. Dogs love to chase these toys all over the house, beating treats out of them. These toys are a great way to give your dog mental stimulation and encourage physical activity.

4. Consider your pet's special needs.

For an older dog who has trouble climbing up on furniture, a set of pet stairs would be a wonderful gift. Aging pets will also appreciate comforts such as soothing heated bed.

5. Give the gift of clean teeth.

For most dogs, getting their teeth brushed is no fun. Toys like the Easy Brush "chew it yourself" toothbrush allow the dog to brush his own teeth by chewing on a bone covered with bristles and tasty toothpaste. Old fashion rawhide chews and rubber chew toys are also good for your dog's teeth since they help remove plaque and prevent dental disease.
