Book reviews: Life of Pi, by Yann Martel

by Robert Guphito

Created on: March 28, 2009

Yann Martel, Pi Patel, and Me. "Meet in a book review now."

What is in my mind, about Yann? Know when he took four years for research. Visited many zoo, places of worship, and researched from the books. Know Yann won Man Booker Prize 2002. Pi Patel says to me, "I am also happy". His face likes just out from "storm and stress". This make me think Yann Martel has ventured on hard with Pi. I am happy to meet here and see Yann and Pi.

Pi Patel begins to tell the story that the age of 16 when he and his family in voyage, moved from Indian to Canada. Passed the Pacific Ocean, the largest ocean in the world, wild nature, unexpected weather and waves, and there is the adventure with wild animals. I imagine and say: "Your stories likely will be difficult!"

According to me before the adventure, Pi was quite funny and religious. He grew in the middle-class family also modern secular Indian family. I ask him: "Piwhy are you always restless about spiritual matters?" Pi answers: "I do not know just want to continue the search. I have found the teachers alone to learn Christianity and Islam."

Yann adds: "He was assumed strange by his parents because he has practiced the teachings of Hinduism, requested to be baptized Catholic, and then prayed with the Islam way each prayer time arrived."

Yann looks me and I say: "Much of the content of the book is what happened in the boat for seven months, Pi floated with animals from the zoo. How you told in different style make this book difficult forgotten. You success make us experience Pi's adventure and his lonely feeling without friends on the sea."

I say to Pi: "I am tense, my heart flutters to see you lose hope and sloppy when you remember your mother and don't know where your mother is, continue to calculate the day, and see visions of many things while there is only a little hope in the horizon."

Yann and Pi are chitchat. I am still open the novel, not up to half the book, one by one the animals were not able to survive, only Pi and "Richard Parker" (how the fierce tiger got this cool name, a story is unique and funny). All known about the animal nature and the relationship between humans and wild animals the basis for Pi stated to Richard Parker that "he" is human that power in the boat. Guidelines are also useful for us if to try "close" with the animals even if it was wild.

Religious people such as Pi, his faith is tested over time and what God truly as he trusts. At the peak of despair Pi doubt God is with him when disaster struck
