Thoughts on online dating

To Be or Not to Be

In today's fast track technologically driven society I firmly believe that just about anything that you could want can be found on the internet, and I mean everything.

Dating has taken on a whole new life form with online dating. It is like shopping for men. All you have to do is enter in what you are looking for and you will get hundreds of results. You can even search by what religion he is, height, weight, build, or astrological sign. But where is the fun in that? It seems like online dating has given us hundreds of options that we may have never seen in our normal lives because these people don't go to the same restaurants as us or travel in our extended network of friends.

But my point is that it takes all of the magic out of life and love. On top of that fact, the product you are viewing isn't always the one delivered. In the online mall of man shopping any picture or description can be put up on the website and you have no idea what you will really get. Perhaps you will end up with a 50 year old stalker when all you wanted was that hot little 21 year old with the six pack abs looking for his future wife. Or perhaps you were looking for the driven 30 year old that is moving up in the business world like yourself, when you get a lazy 25 year old that works at McDonalds and dreams of moving up to french fry supervisor. Perhaps they should be like eBay and have a rating system where women who have tried out the man can tell other women if he is who he says he is, or if he is insane.

Online dating? While I believe that you can find just about anything you could ever need on the internet, I am not quite sure about online dating. While of course you see all those commercials with a free, "compatibility profile" guaranteed to find you a soul mate, have we really become that desperate? Are we all so afraid of being alone that we have crawled in front of our computers and uploaded pics of ourselves from 3 years ago when we still had that sexy tummy?

I honestly felt like I was on eBay bidding for a new toy while browsing profiles. This one only wants sex, this one has a great picture but he is too Christian, this one looks good but I don't like his hair.... The men have no opportunity to surprise you with their amazing charm, fascinating intellect, unique qualities, or overall spectacular personalities. Where is the romance in online dating?

Initially while browsing profiles, what is the first thing that you look at? The photograph of course! If he isn't cute you just move onto the next one. Ladies get the same treatment. If you put up a hot picture you will have more emails in your inbox then you will have time in one day to sort through. How fair is that though? Initially in real life the first spark comes from a visual attraction, but sometimes that isn't always the first thing to catch someone's eye. Some people may not photograph well, but when they walk into a room the whole place seems to glow. Or a man or woman can walk in and become the most charming person in the room.

Plus, with human interaction we learn so much more about people then with a photograph. A majority of all conversation is non-verbal. You can tell so much more about a person by the way they stand, and the way they talk. But who am I to judge..

Perhaps online man shopping is just not for me and it could be for others. Ladies, proceed with caution in the world of the online man mall, I have no idea how things will turn out with online dating, but it seems like it is a very huge thing right now. Let's see where it goes, and hopefully one day the dating sites will adopt a quality control ratings system!
