The moral values of Mayberry are attractive indeed, but do they work in today's society? All one has to do is watch the news, or read it in the paper or on-line to know that at present these values are not working. For such values to work they must be followed by everyone in society. We have been bombarded with the idea that each one of us is so special that we each deserve to be catered to, pampered, and have things our way at any cost. Personal rights prevail over the good of all in the minds of the many.
Looking at the economic mess of 2008-2009 shores up this though as those who held positions of responsibility have thrown trustworthiness to the dogs in order to bolster their private lives by cheating, lying, and steeling from those whom they vowed to serve. The private sector is not much better. Many think little of steeling, though usually they don't call it steeling, they feel they deserve it saying "I'll just take a few of these home with me...they have more than they need and besides I deserve it since they don't pay me what I'm worth anyway." More than a few take what they want and do what they want regardless of right or wrong.
The above are just small examples of the lack of values prevalent today. This should come as no surprise for the scriptures tell us at Micah 7: 2 that "The loyal one has perished from the earth, and among mankind there is no upright one." Since the writing of Micah was completed in 716 B.C.E. (Before Common Era) have these values ever worked? They have, to a greater or lesser degree, in some societies, but since Adam and Eve's disobedience in the garden of Eden moral values have been playing a tug-of-war with the 'me first' attitude. The Bible tells us at Ecclesiastes 8:9 "...that man has dominated man to his injury", showing that the leaders as well as those who should be loyal friends fail miserably.
Since the lack of upholding moral values goes back to the beginning of human time, is there any hope that we will see a time when, like the towns-people of Mayberry RFD, all peoples the world over will live by the laws of love as set out by our creator, Jehovah God? You only need read Revelation 21:3-5 to find the answer, it tells of a time when "...God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
What a wonderful time to look forward to, and we know it will be a time lived with high moral values for at John 13: 35 we read "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves." When you love someone you don't steal from them, cheat on them, or abuse their rights, for love produces fine fruits.
