Reflections: Worry

by Mario Carini

Created on: March 27, 2009

Worries are a part of life. A worry-free existence is not possible. But worries should be the springboard that leads to action in order to make life better. Unfortunately, the hectic pace of life translates into a multitude of problems that many people simply can't handle. The result is mental, emotional and physical disability.

Learning how to control worry is a neglected skill that is just as important as studying for a career. People who succeed in life have learned to control their fears and effectively channel their energy into action that moves them toward a goal. They have little time to worry as it becomes the incentive they need to keep working toward success.

Worry is a mental problem. It's the undisciplined thoughts that lead to headaches, anxiety, fatigue and emotional distress. Knowing how to discipline your mind will go a long way to helping you find solutions to every problem, cope with life's problems and find peace and contentment. Learning to focus on a solution rather than stewing about your problems will determine how successful you will be.

Marcus Aurelius, who ruled the Roman Empire, said: "Our life is what our thoughts make it." When our thoughts are cluttered up with worry and fear, we will not progress through life. Worry feeds on itself until it grows into a mountain.

To eliminate most of your worries, you need to follow a few simple steps:

* Be concerned about your worries, but don't ignore them. You need to taking action. Any kind of action is better than staying frozen in fear. Look at your worries as challenges that you must overcome.

* Think Happy. It's hard to find anything to be happy about when war, famine and murder make up most of the news in today's newspapers and on the TV. The way we view the world and our problems is the result of living in a negative environment. Unfortunately, thinking in negative lines stifles creativity and prevents us from finding lasting solutions to problems. Thinking happy doesn't mean ignoring problems. Rather it opens the approach that most problems can be resolved in time.

* Count your blessings. It's human nature to always want more and improve life. While self-improvement is important, you should always be thankful for what you have. The majority of the world's population simply don't enjoy the lifestyle that many of us in the developed world are accustomed to. It should be mandatory to take time of to realize and be grateful for what you already have. Your problems are small in comparison to others.
