Hidden travel gems of the Southeastern US

The Southeastern part of the United States, where warm climates and friendly faces greet you. Places where time has stood still and history is alive and well. Home of exotic birds, palm trees and interesting locales. If you're looking for a vacation that is out of the ordinary, you're in the right spot.

The Southeast offers many tourist attractions, some common, some not so common. If you enjoy long walks, becoming one with nature and stunning visual beauty, then The Pinckney Island Wildlife National Refuge is the place for you. Located off I-95 (exit 8) between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, South Carolina, Pinckney Island offers spectacular views, beautiful wildlife and miles of walking trails.

Wait until you see...

Catch a glimpse of alligators in their natural habitat as well as the American Bald Eagle, Painted Bunting and Egrets. Parking is ample and the Island is open year round (the best time to visit is during the Spring and Fall months. Visit http://www.fws.gov/pinckneyisl and/index.htm for details. Stay at one of the many hotels located on Hilton Head Island or in Bluffton. (Important tip: try to avoid Highway 278 during rush hour. Traffic moves very slowly.)

Wait there's more.

Looking for a day trip to compliment the trip to the Pinckney refuge, you don't have to go too far. Head down Highway 278 West to I-95 South exit 5, where you'll find the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge, which lies on both the South Carolina and Georgia sides of the Savannah River, offers wading birds, nesting areas for Osprey, Great Horned Owls and alligators.

If that's not enough.

Head on down to Savannah, GA, where the warm breezes of today and yesterday caress your skin. Take a carriage ride through Savannah, where you'll see many historic homes and sites. Highlight your stay in one of Savannah's many hotels where you can take to the streets for a leisurely stroll. A great deal of history has been preserved in Savannah. Take in the sites, smells and sounds of Savannah.

Heading back up the coast to Hilton Head? Take the scenic route. Highway 17 to Highway 46 to Highway 278 East takes you back to Hilton Head Island where you will also enjoy biking, swimming and nature walks. Hilton Head boasts sandy beaches, walking trails and biking trails as well as great restaurants.

Family Friendly.

Hilton Head is also family friendly. With delights for adults as well as children, no one will feel left out. Hilton head is also approx. 30 minutes from Savannah and about an hour and a half from Charleston, SC.
