Everyone who travels regularly is bound to have accumulated a horror story or two. I may be a little biased but I think mine should win some sort of award for being the WORST vacation ever. Now only was it a vacation, it was also my honeymoon!
My husband and I married last year and decided to go to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for our honeymoon. It was also going to serve as the summer vacation we take annually with his sister and her husband.
I should have known we made a terrible mistake on the trip from the airport to our luxury all inclusive resort. There are no signs on the roadways and the roadways themselves are rarely paved and always laden with huge holes. The rule of the road seems to be, whoever has the biggest vehicle goes first. I almost kissed the ground when we finally made it to our resort.
We arrived after 5:30PM. Our room was to be ready at 3:00PM. It wasn't. We reserved the honey moon suite, but the hotel was offering an upgrade to the adults only portion of the resort. I learned on this trip, that adults only did not mean better bars, and night time entertainment. It means people that should never be viewed in a bathing suit have the freedom to walk around naked!
We took the upgrade, were given a map of the resort, and were warned about leaving the gated community with anyone except licensed tour guides. At least we are pretty sure that's what the guy said. His french was better than his English but Spanish was clearly his native language.
By the end of the first night we were disappointed in the beach. The beach was dirty. There were vendors selling things every 10 feet. And you had to maneuver around all those naked people I mentioned earlier just to get to the bar for a drink. The ocean was no better. There was absolutely nothing worth seeing in the water. A few dead pieces of coral and a LOT of seaweed was not our idea of "prime snorkeling" There was a sunken ship relatively close to shore but forget trying to get out to it on your own. The locals drove their speedboats back and forth continually in front of it making decapitation a sure thing to anyone foolish enough to try swimming out there. The locals would have been more than happy to take us out there and back on a 20 minute "excursion" for $45.00 USD a piece!
Even the food was nothing to rave about. Every meal was buffet style, unless you made reservations at a specialty restaurant. The men had to wear collered shirts and closed toed shoes, but the women could come in wearing next
