Many fall into the allure that they are saving money with coupons but this isn't entirely true. In most cases the items that have coupons are the more expensive brands or simply items you don't already use. Many times, coupons are just a means of marketing to allure you in to buy their product. The end of your receipt may tell you how much you have saved, but what if you could have saved even more without those coupons?
Always Make a List
Always plan out the meal for the week or two weeks ahead of time. This allows you to see what ingredients you will need to buy. Do not go to the store without your list. You tend to buy more than you need and even forget some items that you will need. A list also helps keep you focused and helps guard against impulse buying.
Use Generic Products
Many times the generic product is just as good as the pricier brand. If you will notice, most generic brands have the same ingredients as named brands. What you are really paying for is packaging with most name brands. If you will notice you can save more on generic brands than name brand with coupons. So even with using coupons, you would still pay more.
Unit Pricing
Many times stores will have the unit price displayed, but not always. It is really easy to figure out once you know how. For example, you want to compare two sizes (or brands) of apple sauce. Simply take the price of the item and divide by the ounces. You then have the unit price. Use this for deciding whether buying the larger jar is cheaper in the long run. Also use unit pricing when buying prepackaged items. Simply take the price and divide it buy the amount in the box. For example, say you buy granola bars but want to find out which box is the better buy, the 6 bars box or the 10 bars box. For each box take the price and divide it buy the amount in the box. Sometime buying in bulk is can be cheaper in the long run, but again this isn't always the case.
Comparison Shopping
This takes some time, but it is worth it in the long run. Think about the grocery stores that are in your area. You can even narrow it down to the stores you pass along the way to where ever you normally go on a daily or weekly basis. Comparison shopping may take you to different stores for different items, but if you map out when and where to go you will be amazed at how much you do save.
Now for the lengthy part of comparison shopping, make a list of the items you normally get. Also, make a list of items you occasionally buy. Set aside time to go to each
