Hidden travel gems of the Southeastern US

This is a blatant, intentional, and unabashed enticement to share special experiences only found in the Southeastern United States. These three destinations are favorites, but hardly scratch the surface of wonders we have explored on brief forays from my home in Georgia.

THE OVERSEAS HIGHWAY TO KEY WEST
The greatest thing about a trip to Key West is getting there. The scenic two-lane road with water on both sides and 43 bridges is one of the great thrill rides of the country that is neither harrowing nor death-defying.

The pace is leisurely, and if you are renting a car, get a convertible.

Mile markers along the route measure from Key West and point toward many attractions not directly on the road.

The Fish House off Mile Marker 102, is on Card Key Sound Road, through an authentic Florida swamp with mangroves, pelicans, and who knows what else. Fishers from nearby boats sell their fish at the back door, and a sandwich from the day's catch is almost unbelievably fresh and delicious.

The steamboat from "The African Queen", is on display at Key Largo, Mile Marker 100. The village reminds you of the Bogart-Bacall "Key Largo" movie, but a boat from another movie fits.

Jules Undersea Lodge (305-451-2353) at the Emerald Lagoon is billed as the world's only underwater hotel. Stop for a short dive and rest from the road, or vacation here and day trip to near-by Key West.

Seven-mile Bridge, at Mile Marker 50, one of the longest and most spectacular bridges in the world, elegantly rises above the water to views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

SAVANNAH, GA
Savannah promotes its unique Southern Style of gentility with tongue in cheek and promises of more than meets the eye. Everything about the city follows the advice of favorite son and songwriter, Johnny Mercer, "Accentuate the Positive", as it embraces modern culture and Southern style.

Savannah is an enticing hunting ground for antique memorabilia and history.

The Antique Emporium on 38th Street, www.merchantcircle.com and the Friday newspaper want ads list enticements for Saturday estate sales and rambles around the area that seldom disappoint.

Local 11Ten, www.local11ten.com, on Bull Street, features food grown near Savannah like clams and soft-shell crabs from the Georgia coast, and loquats and figs grown right down the street. Savannah locals love the modern surroundings, the evident pride of place, and the wonderfully delicious food.

TYBEE ISLAND
We love living "on the beach" at Tybee Island, Ocean Plaza, a 20-minute scenic drive into Savannah. We enjoy the sun and sand, dancing to live music, and checking out the independent beach eateries.

There is a YMCA health center just down the road in the downtown area. There are also department stores and gift shops with unusual and fun beachwear.

The Tybee Museum is a revelation as it tells you about the island, its history, and role in the civil war.

Plan a trip to the Southeastern United States. Prepare for unusual sights and experiences and a huge basket of special pleasures. A visit to this part of the country will not disappoint.
