To bring a child into the world is a wonderful, amazing ability most woman possess. For many, this experience is the most meaningful experience of their lives and the ultimate opportunity to achieve something significant. However, for some, having a child is not a life long dream, or even a situation they can adapt to. In such a case, adoption may be the most humane and suitable option, which is neither selfish or wrong.
For those individuals who want to have a family, the thought of giving a child up for adoption may seem incredibly selfish. This would be particularly so for those individuals who do not have the ability to bare a child of their own, however few people stop to consider the reasons for the parents giving the child for adoption.
If adoption is for the purpose of giving a child a better life, one which could not have been provided by its birth parents, then there is no greater gift that can be given to that child. If a parent knows they are incapable of raising this child in a healthy or stable environment, this may be the most unselfish decision a person can make. When considering why an individual puts a child up for adoption, few actually stop and consider that perhaps it is in the child's best interests. To give the child a chance at a happy, fulfilling life, where their basic needs will be satisfied, is far less selfish than keeping a child when you know you can barely afford to live yourself, or if you know your lifestyle is unsafe. Perhaps the mother was a drug addict and wanted her child to be free from her own haunted past, or perhaps the child was the result of a rape, and the mother would never be able to give the child the love it deserves, due to the distress of her conception. There are so many reasons why a person may choose to give their child up for adoption.
Not only is it unselfish from the child's perspective, if they are given up for adoption to be given a better chance for the future, it is also an incredibly giving experience to provide someone with a child who may not have been capable of having their own. For an infertile couple, having the ability to adopt a child and bring it up as their own, giving the child all the love they would have given a child of their own blood is a highly rewarding experience.
If a child is unwanted by a person, by giving them up for adoption, you are giving the child a chance of being far happier than growing up in a loveless household. People adopt out their children for various reasons and generally it involves giving on two sides. The giving starts by allowing the child a better life, and continues, by giving an individual or a copy a chance at having their own complete family. Adoption is not selfish at all.
