Professor Snape: there's more to him than meets the eye. When we are first introduced to him we see him as a sinister, cold-hearted person who hates Harry. We do not know why this is yet, and his personality may seem confusing. The reader could be totally convinced that Severus Snape is a horrible person, but then why does he save Harry during his first Quidditch Match? Why does he do a lot of things that makes us, as readers, believe that he is a foe? For the entire "Harry Potter" series he is shown as a person who has a deep hatred for Harry and then he may suddenly do something totally out of his character. That's the moment we realize he's a good person and we don't find out why this is until the final installment of the "Harry Potter" books.
In his first year at Hogwarts, Harry believes that Professor Snape is a person who doesn't like him and it is this that sparks the belief that Snape wants the Sorcerer's Stone. At the end, however, it is proved that he doesn't want the stone. So, what could this mean? That he's not a foe after all? Every single thing that Snape does is something awful and often he is threatening Harry. Few moments are seen when he is actually nice. Through these you can sincerely tell that Professor Snape might be protecting Harry, instead of hating him. Take "Goblet of Fire" for instance. Professor Snape was not the one to plan everything out. He might not have even known that it was going to happen.
If you read carefully through the series you can see that Snape's hatred of Harry is only there to protect him. I'm sure that Snape wouldn't want to see Lily Evans' son die! After all, he loved her. To read all the answers in "Deathly Hallows" is one thing, but to pick them up on your own is another. Professor Snape may have a mask on throughout the series, a mask that was only revealed in "Deathly Hallows". His actions were not for evil, but for good because in the entire series he still loved Lily Evans. Why would Snape want to kill her son? There is no reason at all why it should happen!
Harry should consider Professor Severus Snape a friend because of all the things he did anonymously to protect Harry from Lord Voldemort. Professor Snape was, after all, the one who saved Harry in the Quidditch Match, the one who (tried) to teach him Occulmency, and he stayed loyal to Dumbledore right to the end. If that's not what a friend, then I don't know what is. Perhaps we finally know the reason why Albus Dumbledore trusted Snape so much: because he was a friend.
