He didn't wrap it in shiny pink paper
Or put a big shimmery bow on it
He didn't even attach a greeting card
No, he slipped it into the back pocket
Of my jeans, when I wasn't looking
And I foolishly kept waiting for it
Thinking it came with words or a shiny ribbon
He would pick me up and take me out
Or just smile at me while holding my hands
And when our eyes locked, I sparkled
In ways that I wasn't sure he could see
But he looked at me with such acceptance
That it didn't matter if I was in my best dress
Or my oldest sweatpants
He held my hands and pulled at my heartstrings
And finally I realized
I was waiting for what I already had
Working for something, for which
I never even had to try
It had been with me the entire time
In my back pocket
