Martial arts requires as much mental power as it does physical, learning a martial art during your childhood has many benefits and will certainly help you in your later years of life. A Childs brain absorbs information like a sponge, everything is stored easily and movements and techniques are easier to learn. Remembering a martial art so it becomes second nature to you like walking would be easier the younger you are.
Children struggle to understand martial arts, not many kids take the sport and spirituality of the arts serious, from what I've seen in lessons in different arts over the years studying martial arts I would say only 1 in 10 take the art serious and stay in lessons. The child who takes it serious and does the stretch's and exercises properly as they are growing will have the greatest benefits of a healthy body, mind and be able to look after themselves. The younger a child learns and takes it serious the better a martial artist they will become, children's ligaments and joints can be trained to perfection easier than someone who has many years of strain or injury.
Learning a traditional martial art takes understanding of internal energy and external movement which many children wont understand until their later years, however the bodies joints and smaller muscles take years to develop properly and the younger someone does this the stronger their body will be in later years of life. Many experts say that tai chi can add ten years onto your life, not many children will understand or enjoy this art. Tai chi isn't very proactive; it involves relaxing and breathing a little like yoga.
If you were ever considering your child to take a career in martial arts then starting as young as the age of 6 would be best for your child, bones are still growing and developing there is always a risk of breaking bones however they heal stronger, the best time to condition bones is in your younger years not by purposely breaking bones. Just by training they will become stronger, martial arts isn't the same as going to the gym, through martial arts you train your bones, ligaments and the main muscles that counts, your brain. Introducing you child to martial arts is best around the age of 6 or above, the body and brain are both functioning at the right level to start learn as of the age 6. Enrolling your children when they're young to clubs such as mixed martial arts, kickboxing or karate will have the best results, and then consider deeper arts such as kung fu, tai chi and jujitsu as they grow and become a teenager.
