How to save money while visiting Dublin

by Peter Scott

Created on: March 26, 2009

Dublin is one of Europe's most expensive cities and for most visitors offers a challenge of tight money control. At present in the hectic financial climate, it is possible to lower costs with a few simple measures.

1. Accommodation

Since your lodgings are probably the most expensive part of your stay, it is important to get good value for money. Dublin's accommodation market has been badly affected by the economic downturn, and you can certainly get very good deals. Some things to consider if you are pre-booking through the internet;

- is the price per person (the usual manner of quoting) or per room? Some hotels, notably the Jurys Inn group, quote per room, and a small group travelling can make quite a saving.
- does the price quoted include breakfast? Many hotels do not include breakfast, so what seems like a very good deal might melt when 10-12 per person, per day, is added
- If it is a three- or four-star hotel, and you're getting a goof offer, where is the hotel located? You might find it is not near the city centre, or near a good transport route. This is important if you're sampling the night life, and need to take a taxi (if not near a public transport corridor) - taxis are expensive after 8pm.

Dublin, as in any part of Ireland, offers an extensive Bed & Breakfast network. Apart from busy periods, it is not necessary to book in advance, and you can often negotiate a good deal, particularly in the evening if they have not filled all their rooms. You can ask to see the room before paying, and still walk out if you are not happy.

2. Getting around Dublin

Public transport, as well as taxis, is expensive although there are cheaper alternatives. There are three basic modes of transport in Dublin - bus (Dublin Bus), tram (Luas) and rail (Irish Rail). The latter operates the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) - frequent and safe commuter electric trains. All three systems offer a variety of day, three-day and weekly passes; however, it can sometimes be cheaper to buy them from an agent (typically a general retail shop such as a newsagent). They all publish details on their websites, so do check this carefully.

3. Things to do - for free!

While some of Dublin's most famous attractions have an admission charge, notable Guinness's Storehouse, Trinity College Dublin's Book of Kells and St. Patrick's Cathedral (although I will explain how to avoid that), there are many attractions that are free. All state-run museums and galleries are free, including the National Gallery and the National Museum (on the Luas's red Line). Entrance to TCD is free and you are able to explore this wonderful campus yourself, except late at night. St. Patrick's Cathedral requests a charge from visitors - they don't receive state funding and rely on contributions to keep this expensive building. However, if you check their website, and attend a service (evensong is typically 30 minutes long), then you can have a wonderful experience hearing a famous choir, have a quick look at the building afterwards, and still feel free to give a contribution!
