Why Memorial Day is celebrated

It is important to celebrate Memorial Day to honor, respect, and recognize the soldiers that fought for our country. Memorial Day is celebrated with parades and programs that honor veterans and their families. In many places loved ones decorate the graves of the ones who died and fought in the Civil War. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, it's a day of remembrance for those who died in our military. It's also a day about reconciliation, and coming together in peace.

Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson. Then was officially proclaimed and established on May 5th,1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the General Army of the Republic,in his General Order. Later, Memorial Day was first observed on May 30th,1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. It is now celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday in May.

Some believe Memorial Day started in 1864 in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania when two women met in a cemetery. As they put flowers on the graves of family members, who died in the Civil War. They agreed to return each year to decorate the graves. This gracious act of kindness received national attention. To celebrate Memorial Day, it is important to know about the wars that we fought, and to recognize the roles played by women. We must think about the impact of these two women made on their families and communities.

Many Americans today have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day.This day is to help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day.The National Moment of Remembrance Resolution was passed on December 2000, which asks at 3p.m. local time for all Americans to voluntarily observe in their own way a Moment of Silence, to respect the ones that fought for our country.

When Memorial Day comes around at the end of May. People like to go to the beach with their families and friends, have a barbecue at home or go away on a long weekend. Whatever, they like to do for the 3 day weekend let us remember and respect the real reason why we celebrate Memorial Day weekend. Its to remember all the ones that fought in the wars of the past and present. After all, they paved the way for soldiers of today. We should consider the courtesy of the two women that first placed their flowers on the graves of their loved ones. Maybe we can return the same courtesy of these women and place our American flags out to celebrate, maybe even go to a parade. That is why Memorial Day is so importantly celebrated.
