Before finding a puppy to add to the family there are several things one should take into consideration. If you've already come to the point of trying to decide where to find the right puppy, then you've probably already decided that you have the time, money, and dedication to do so. If not, then take a few steps back and do so, for the sake of your happiness as well as the puppy's.
Whether you've decided what breed is best for you or not, there are several ways to locate available puppies before you physically start searching. Check the Internet, phone book, and newspaper for local shelters and breeders. Keep an eye out for fliers advertising litters and write down the numbers of those that interest you.
Once you've compiled a list of possibilities, find out whatever you can about these sources. Visit shelters and observe and ask about the dogs and conditions. Talk to breeders before you put your trust fully into any one, and do some research on them if possible.
The best way to ensure that the puppy you bring home is healthy is to find a reputable breeder. It will probably be expensive, but you will know your puppy's background, that it was born from healthy dogs, and probably has its first shots.
Since breeders are expensive, finding a puppy at a shelter is highly recommended. Sometimes entire unwanted litters are sent to shelters, so it is possible to find a young puppy this way. It is likely to cost you very little and you will be saving a life if it is not a safe shelter. You may not be given any information on the puppy's lineage, though.
Pet stores are not recommended. They are known for selling unhealthy pets that could be inbred, diseased, or kept in poor conditions. It may seem like buying such an animal could be considered "rescue," but when the animal gets sick and nobody wants to take care of it, both owner and pet are put in a bad position.
Lastly, it is possible to find healthy animals that are being sold or given away at random in flea markets, parking lots, and other places. These animals can be acquired quickly and with little hassle, but you may never know anything about your pet's background. I have actually had success with this method. The only two dogs I've had (a male and female chow-collie mix) were acquired this way and have been happy and healthy for the few years we've had them.
In the end, you have to decide whether you're willing to risk bringing home an unhealthy pet or if you'll pay the money for an animal whose health is a bit more guaranteed. Remember, though, that this puppy will grow to be a part of your family. Think with your head and search with your heart.
