Poetry: The day love died

by Grace Savage

Created on: March 25, 2009

you were love to me.

violence and cruelty abated with your gentle tone,

and touch.

.
when i came to know you,

i gambled the only thing i had left to give:

my heart.

.
you were the only one who ever won

my heart. my love.

i fell in love, for the first time,

with you.
.
my dream, my determination,

was to spend the rest of my life with you.

- and i did.

.
the day that love died,
and the flame was extinguished by a cold laughter

that mocks me,
haunts me.

.everything i thot was true of love,
of life, of worth,
died too.
.
and my own life has ended,

and this aching body

becomes only an urn to transport the ashes

to their final scattering.
.
my heart is broken,

and the shards of it are piercing.

and the blood runs, covering everything

that once was pure.

everything that once was delight.

everything at all that simply ever was.

.
bloody. broken. fractured.

a disfigured soul deemed worthless
cries out only to be released,

and set free to sing of eternal sleep.
