SKIING IN CT
There's a gem in the northwest corner of CT. A gem that's not very large, but one that shines brightly. For those who live in that corner we are able to ski at Ski Sundown located in New Hartford CT. Yes, there are larger resorts nearby, however, this ski area packs a mighty punch. Approximately 20 miles northwest of Hartford, Ski Sundown is easily accessible to many towns, and it's quite easy to find. This is their 40th year of operation, so they are doing something right, and they'll continue to do it well into the future.
The area boasts 5 lifts: 3 triple chairs, 2 double chairs as well as a conveyor which provides an access to the "bunny" slopes where many children as well as adults have taken their first lessons. Ski Sundown has 15 trails with snow making on 14 of them. Even if you look out your window and don't see any snow cover in your yard, that doesn't mean there isn't any skiing. It takes a blizzard like storms, torrential downpours or extremely warm temperatures over several days to stop skiing. There are 9 novice runs, 3 intermediate trails and 2 expert runs and of course, a gentle slope for beginners as well as 2 that are set aside for snow boarders and aerial skiers as well as 2 areas set aside for mogul skiing.
Although the resort is considered small compared to the larger ones in nearby states, it enables skiers to get much more skiing in and less time waiting in long lines for the lifts. It's a family friendly place, but then again, they are friendly to everyone. The employees are courteous, helpful and polite. The slopes are always meticulously groomed and they offer night skiing 6 nights a week.
Ski Sundown is also a partner with STRIDE, an organization located in nearby Massachusetts that helps people with physical and developmental disabilities enjoy sports. The Adaptive Program provides lessons for people of all ages and all abilities. Without a program like this, many skiers and/or snow boarders would never get the chance to get out on the slopes. It has a very capable team of instructors who offer their vast knowledge to their students and are genuinely exited as the student masters new techniques and builds up his/her confidence. The 2 1/2 hr lesson includes a lift ticket, as well as all equipment necessary. There are specialized pieces of equipment that are matched up with the skier's needs and there are no extra charges for them.
Sundown provides special days for students, ski camps, wild west days and crazy hat days just to mention a few, all of which bring happiness to skiers/snow boarders and onlookers.
Perhaps you're thinking that the ski season is over as it could very well be because it's almost April, but in the future, please remember this area for next season. So if you're looking for a great place to ski this is a wonderful destination.
