All about bamboo flooring

Bamboo flooring is not hardwood as some people may think, even though it is sold as hardwood. This flooring is actually made of grass bamboo to be exact. The choice of installing bamboo as the flooring for homes is one that many homeowners are now making for several reasons. Firstly, bamboo is suitable to use in any room of the home. Because it comes from a tropical climate, it is well used to moisture and is resistant to spills. Because of its water resistance, bamboo flooring is perfect for the bathroom. You don't have to choose a different type of flooring for kitchens and bathrooms and thus, you can save money by buying a large quantity of bamboo flooring to do all the floors of your home.

Bamboo flooring sold in North America comes from China. There are actually more than 1000 varieties of Chinese bamboo. Bamboo is a plant that grows very quickly and regenerates itself, so you won't be doing any damage to the ecosystem by installing bamboo flooring in your home.

Bamboo is the most durable flooring product you can buy. It is even better than red oak and maple and is of just as high a quality as the traditional wood floorings. The only limitation you will find in bamboo flooring is that there are only two colors available. One is a very light color, almost lighter than pine and the other is a dark amber color. The light color is the natural color of bamboo flooring and the amber color is the result of the carbonization that occurs in the drying process.

Bamboo flooring is available as finished and unfinished. If you don't want the bother of having to apply the stain and coating yourself, then you can save yourself time by buying the finished bamboo flooring. If you do decide to apply the finish yourself, you have to make sure you use products that are specially designed for bamboo flooring.

The bamboo flooring planks come in 3 foot and 6 foot lengths. The process of installing the bamboo flooring is the same as other types of wood flooring. You snap the planks together and either nail or glue them to the floor or you can just snap them together for a floating floor. Before you start the installation process, however, you do need to acclimatize the bamboo to your home by opening the boxes and spreading out the planks. Leave them in this way for a few days so that they can adjust to the temperature of your home before you start installing them.

Caring for bamboo flooring is also relatively easy. Just sweep up any dust and dirt and wash it up using products that are safe for bamboo.
