Simplicity, passion and brilliance this are all words that can be used to described the world's most popular sport. Football (Soccer) fans number in 3.3-3.6 billion range, about half of the worlds populace. Such numbers are simply astounding and many have asked why such a sport has generated such worldwide support. There are many reasons but some of the most pertinent ones will be highlighted. The popularity of this sport can be attributed to factors ranging from its simple nature to its difficulty.

Firstly, this sport is one of the easiest to pick up as a casual player which makes it fun. Involving only a ball, some players and an open space to kick a ball around it is one of the simplest sports around. It's objectives are simple (scoring more goals) but it's execution can vary. At the lowest player levels the game's fluid nature is not fully developed leading players to keep at the sport to develop their skill. So soccer is simple to play and popular because the more you keep at it the better you get.

The second reason why this sport is so popular hinges on the support of the fans. The fact that the sport exist in virtually every nation in the world sees fans supporting their favourite players at the highest level who come from their home country. Unlike many other sports which exist in select countries, world football is truly a world sport existing everywhere. When the hometown boy is participating in a country tournament such as the World Cup or a league fixture such as the English Premier League all their fans follow the action. Every country can put up a team for qualification to play in the World Cup. Although only the best teams make it, countrymen from the smallest nations such as Trinidad to the largest such as Russia throw all their support behind their local heroes. Fans build up the excitement at games, the pace an intensity of games are sometimes determined by the support of the fans. This reciprocal relationship makes the games more exciting, players spurring support of the fans and fans cheering on their players.

Extravagant lifestyles and enormous pay-days are third reason why this sport is so popular. Many players at the highest leagues in Europe have multi-million dollar contracts. Everyone growing up wants to have fame and fortune and this is the avenue to attain this. Allow me to draw a parallel to the
