Book reviews: The Wedding, by Nicholas Sparks

Created on: March 25, 2009

I only have one reason why I decided to read this book, it's the sequel of one of my favorite books ever, The Notebook. Although I'm a bit disappointed because this is not as good as it's prequel, The Wedding still has its own way of piercing through your heart. And yes, you don't have to be under matrimony to comprehend and feel the emotions of the characters.

This is again one of those books I've read in one sitting. Yes, it's a pretty short novel. It started with Wilson forgetting the 29th wedding anniversary of him and his wife Jane. Wilson is faced with the predicament of her wife leaving him. He is thinking that his wife is no longer happy with him. There were a lot of flashbacks as to how they used to be that happy and mostly, they had wanted to patterned their love story to Jane's Mom and Dad, Allie and Noah Calhoun (which were the main character of The Notebook).

It's pretty much about the preparation of a wedding. While on the other hand it's also about how Wilson struggles to bring back the love of his wife and how he would want to make up for that 29th anniversary lapse that he had made. He'll do everything to save their marriage. It's a story about second chances, of how love is definitely sweeter the second time around.

I've always have high respect for Mr. Nicholas Sparks ever since I read The Notebook. The movie adaptation of his another book A Walk to Remember is another favorite and I got all weepy in his another book Message in a Bottle. But this book The Wedding is just one of those books that I did not get teary-eyed nor did I get that in love as compared to his other works. Possibly that's a bad thing but I won't say that this book is a waste of time. Honestly, maybe if I already have a husband and my husband forgot our anniversary I could have reacted the way Jane did. And maybe I would also dream what Wilson had done in order to appease and make up for that incident.

But one of the best thing about this novel is the biggest twist in the end (which of course I am not allowed to say cause I might spoil the fan if you decide to read it). I was really happy for Wilson and I came to understand why some people (especially women) would want their husband to read this book.

As a whole, this book is about relationship. Mostly about family, love between husband and wife, father and son, mother and daughter, father-in-law and son-in-law. A great reminder that we could always start all something new.
