Book reviews: Girls in Pants (The Third Summer of the Sisterhood), by Ann Brashares

by Kristine Cuer

Created on: March 25, 2009

The sisterhood is back for their third summer adventure. This time, the girls is not only faced with the predicament of spending the summer separately but also this would be their last summer before they'd go to college. They all won't be going to the same school of course but they tried not to think of it for now and make the most of what they have for this summer.

Each character had their own uniqueness ever since book one. For this third installment, Carmen had to deal with 3 things: baby-sitting the grandma of Lena, pregnancy of her mom and meeting a good-looking man, Win. Lena is having an issue with her dad because she wants to make it to an Art school. But when her dad realized that painting would involve painting nude male models, her dad stopped financing her whims. Tibby had finally found romance in a dragon master player and had been a great friend to Carmen when she helped Carmen's mom during her delivery. And Bridget who had finally matured since the first book now knows how to handle things especially with regards to things relating to Eric, the soccer coach she had seduced in the first book.

This time, I like all the story of the girls. But in this book, I've learned to love Carmen more. I get to identify with her character more. Carmen's a force of nature. She's ill-tempered as usual but she's striving to get to know herself better. She categorize herself as the good and the bad Carmen.

Wait we forgot to mention the pants. Of course like before, they took turns in using the pants. If you haven't read the first and the second book by the way, this pants is a magical pants. It's magical in a sense that it could fit perfectly to all the girls. And to think that their built are very much different from each other. We have skinny, sporty, slender and chubby or Tibby, Bridget, Lena and Carmen respectively. In this series though, Ann Brashare did not focus that much on the pants but on the individual lives of the girls.

I guess that only goes to show that the real magic really here are the personality of each character and the friendship of the girls. Like some any other series that we had come to like, it's actually amazing to see them grow and mature. In some way, I've learned to love this book because I do have a sisterhood of my own in my real life. And sometimes, I would compare these girls to my girls. This book make me realize how blessed I am to have this set of friends. And the amazing thing is we are also a group of four.=)
