The frequency of reality TV shows on the air has increased. The shows can and devours your time, as a spider eats its prey. As these shows weave themselves into the fabric of life, people spend more time watching TV than they do living life. One would think that the evening news would be enough reality TV for anyone. It is life; it is reality, and it is more than enough reality for me.
What happened to TV shows that were entertaining and comical? Remember the shows that picked us out of our hum drum lives and always were good for a laugh or two. Do you recall when 'MASH' was on? Weren't you secretly disappointed when they did a serious show? It brought back too much reality into the world from which we were trying to escape.
Let's take a look at today's shows, starting with 'Fear Factor'? 'Fear Factor' is a show in which you can literally be scared to death, by your worst nightmare come to life. Reality is the fear factor involved in commuting across the bridges in our nation's infrastructure and praying they hold beneath you and your car. From watching hurricanes such as, Katrina and the others that followed, come ashore to watching your children go off to war isn't that enough reality and fear.
The 'Amazing Race' is a show in which duos race to get ahead of each other to catapult them towards the prize. It reminds me of people racing to keep up with the Jones. The problem is you'll never catch them; if you do it won't make you happy. If this is the rat race, the rats can have it. Too many people waste their lives joining the rat race. Why don't we stop the running; stop the racing and smell the flowers for once. Rat race...no thank you, that's too much reality for me.
Now onward to the 'Chopping Block', isn't this a spin off of 'Fear Factor'? These days you go into work; hold your breath and wait for your job to fall victim upon the 'Chopping Block'. You wait for Donald Trump or some high powered boss to scream at you, "You're Fired". You've been voted off the island. Now you are left adrift like millions of other American's that are dealing with this reality on a daily basis. If this doesn't happen to you, you get to stay at your job for another week and hope and pray you continue to be a 'Survivor'.
To top this off, some survivors are mothers, whether they work outside the home or women are 'Real Housewives', who feel they are stuck in 'Hell's Kitchen'. Their family wonders does mom ever question 'So You Think You Can Dance' as she bounces and jives, to
