This morning I was reminded of a funny story involving my dog. I will admit, this involves a bird, too. And yes, he is a bird dog. A brown retriever who of course is full of personality. Among his many talents is retrieving (go figure) and one of his favorite toys is a squeaky toy football.
I had started playing catch in the backyard with my dog and his squeaky football. Now, when "Bubba" is ready to run a goal, he will take the football in his mouth and chomp down to squeaky his calls out - hut, hut, squeak, right (sorry to all football fans out there). This can go on for hours if Bubba had his way but since I don't have very good night vision, I draw the line after a few games. He will also serenade with his squeaky football (some disco) and I believe at times I have heard mores code for "steak only". Okay back to the story. I had been watering the backyard one day and I heard "Bubba" and his squeaky football out front in the yard.
We have power lines that run along the back and I will sit and enjoy the birds and squirrels from time to time. I wasn't paying much attention- since watering is more a relaxing thing for me, than a science- as it is for my husband. I hear this squeak, squeak, squeak and then this song that is about the most beautiful thing I have heard. I'm thinking my word, I need to get my dog in America's Funniest Video because the pooch has talent. Except, that this is not "Bubba"- but this awesome little bird that is perched on the power line in the back yard. She is singing to "Bubba" a love song. She stays for a long time singing her song and I stand there amazed. She sounds just like the squeaky toy, exactly. Note for note. Unreal. I have never seen this little yellow bird before, either. It's not a canary, I know those and it's not a finch, what is this bird?! Oh, did I mention that "Bubbas" football is yellow? Right. So, from somewhere out there this little bird is answering "the call" of my dog's football. I got the biggest belly laugh from it all that I just shouted out "Oh My Gosh" and went to go get my husband to show him this bird. By the time I reached the front yard my little bird was gone. Right. So, after my husband's smirk and lifted brow (years of marriage) he went back to his tinkering. Not to be believed, hmmm. So of course you know what I did next, I picked up the football and began to squeak to the HEAVENS! You know what happened next? Right. This beautiful little bird flew to the tippy- top of our tree out front and sang me a song. My husband and I just couldn't believe it. Whoa. Right On! We enjoyed our new little friend for weeks. Then she was gone. Sigh. I would squeak but no tweety.
God calls us to Him. He wants to sing us a heart song. We come to listen but do we hear Him, really? Listen. Follow your heart - you will find the lover of your soul and the Creator of all the fowl of the earth Who, sang the original love song with HIS SON.
