Teaching Large Classes In Secondary School
In the rural parts of Africa according to Valerian (1991), transportation is difficult because of the isolation. Children from different ages and levels of knowledge are often packed together within the same classes. Below is an example of large classes' in Africa according to Valerian (1991, page 9):

First grade 1 ..124
First grade 2108
Second grade 1120
Second grade 2110
Third grade 1109
Third grade 298
Fourth grade 1..103
Fourth grade 2..75
Fifth grade 1..93
Fifth grade 2.85
Emphasized by Valerian(1991), not only do large class' affect the quality of teaching delivered; but, they can also affect the concentration of the students who are trying to learn in the classes. Valerian emphasized that with large classes, it is assumed that there are more problems faced by teachers and students. These include students not paying attention to the teacher and some students trying to hide from the teacher's attention.
Large classes require a lot of effort from the teachers to discipline the students. Often teachers are interrupted by the noises coming from students at the back, who are talking and not paying attention, which can annoy and disturb the teacher.
Bailey and Nunan (1996) stated that a class of twenty-nine is considered as too many as not only is the number affecting the quality of teaching; but, it also affects the intake of the knowledge by the students. Some problems that arise from large class' are;

1. Restricting the movement of the teacher Teachers are unable to move freely in the classroom because the classroom is overcrowded.
