There are many reasons why people start a blog or a series of blogs. In the beginning, blogs were simply a form of online journal, where chiefly teenagers would record details of their lives in order to share same with their friends and others which they encountered online from around the world. Slowly, however, marketing and sales professionals started to cotton on to the incredible power of these mediums and how a "sticky" blog could develop a huge following and draw in phenomenal amounts of traffic. The age of the money making blog had arrived.

The first way in which we go about drawing large amounts of traffic to any blog is by ensuring that the blog is on an extremely specific subject and preferably focused upon a particular niche within a market. The more specific the subject is the better in order to decrease the amount of competition it will encounter in search engine rankings and increase the chances of it being found by potential visitors. It is vital that we get this preliminary stage absolutely correct if we are to stand a chance of creating a successful blog.

The next step is to get our blog up and running, make our first post and monetise the layout of our blog. We should make the first and every subsequent post fairly short but one which gives relevant and valuable information to our visitors about the subject to which we are writing. This will naturally vary hugely depending upon the nature of said subject. We also want to keep our posts brief in order that we entice our readers back on a regular basis for more of what we are hoping they will perceive as interesting and/or valuable information.

By monetising our blog, we are generally talking about including in the first instance Google AdSense with a view to obtaining pay per click advertising revenue. This is where we are paid by Google a small consideration per click on the ads which they will deem appropriate and place upon our blog. We can also include upon our blog such as products for sale via Amazon if we join as associates and many other companies who offer us similar arrangements. If we are creating a blog for our small business, we may already have a mail order service which we could offer to potential customers in this fashion or simply link effectively to the company website where this service is available.

We can examine the possibility of adding our blog to such as blog directories and social bookmarking sites around the Web and including links from our blog to other sites of relevance to our subject is always a good idea.

We should ensure that we post to our blog at least two or three times a week in order to keep it fresh and always make the posts interesting and relevant. Products for sale can be updated as and when required. In these ways, we stand the best chance of attracting a maximum amount of traffic to our blog and increasing our income accordingly.
