"Still waters run deep"; This is an idiom we use so often, yet an idiom not many of us have sat down to think about, until now at least.
Going back to my English class, it generally means quiet people are thoughtful or perhaps have little to share but the little that they do share tends to be interesting and that quiet people have interesting' personalities, depending on your definition of interesting' of course! Well, the world we live in isn't that kind, and many of us don't use this term to describe the innocent ravishing personality a quiet person may have. If anything, I too am guilty of using the term rather loosely and my intent is more towards suspicion of one's holier than Thou faade and less towards their mind is a workshop where brilliant creations are produced that the world ought to see.
Have you ever sat amongst a huge group of friends, acquaintances perhaps or mere workmates if not classmates and you find that there is always that one quiet one, the one that's always there at every social event, the very one everyone sees a lot yet the very one no-one knows much about, the one with a gaze that can pierce through you, and it gives you a shiver when you catch the gaze, yet the very one no one hears a single word uttered from? That's a still water running deep and no, not in the ravishing sense, but then again, what does ravishing mean to you?!?
I believe it's the quiet ones that usually have lots to hide. It's almost as if under their quiet exterior lies an interior that is constantly calculating the next naughty move. I suspect people who are too quiet are always scheming up things in their heads be it vindictive, malicious, opportunistic or whatever you would like to call it and they probably look at you thinking, you're all talk! I think they are right and talk is good!
The still waters to me are like a body that can't release toxins, it builds up, up to a point the toxins find a way to surface, and mostly in the form of something ugly (zits maybe). Well, sooner or later, the toxins must surface. The same goes with the still waters, yes the ones with interesting and ravishing personalities. Often an extended quiet spell is broken with the release of one huge, devious move.
The empty vessels that make the most noise, well in contrast to still waters, I believe them to have a purer heart. Sure its verbal venom to the unkind ear, but at least it's a release, a way of venting out what needs to be released, verbalising thoughts, emotions, feelings. And in the end, it's all out, nothing to hide; perhaps blunt and unkind, but think of it this way its like a body that regularly releases its toxins, isn't that what we all strive to do?
