Book reviews: Fancy Nancy, by Jane O'connor

by E L Swist

Created on: March 24, 2009

Jane O'Connor, the author, and Robin Preiss-Glasser , the illustrator, team up to create this soon to be children's classic "Fancy Nancy." In this adorable book the title character is an exceptional young girl who is exceedingly and extraordinarily fancy. Despite having been born into a family where nobody is fancy at all, Nancy is completely uninfluenced. She is truly a girl who is determined to be herself. Not only is she resolved to live life to its fanciest but she but she has also openly accepted the responsibility of brining her entire family over to the fancier side of life.

This book is the first of many adventures that children will delight in experiencing over and over again. Anyone who knows children knows that they love to play and pretend. Nancy is an easy character for most children, especially young girls, to relate to. She is a kid doing what kids do best and children can certainly appreciate that.

Not only does this book, along with the Fancy Nancy titles that have followed it in the Fancy Nancy series, celebrate the creativity and individuality of children but they also begin to introduce children to a expanded English vocabulary by using fancy words such as "stupendous" and "posh" as well as a foreign language. While reading this book you will quickly notice that Nancy is sure to use only the fanciest words to describe anything and everything and it is no secret that when looking for fancy words, a person needs to look no further than the French language. It doesn't get much fancier than that!

When looking for a great, new, and fun book to enjoy with your children you will find that "Fancy Nancy" provides a wonderfully whimsical story combined with beautifully drawn and brightly colored illustrations. It is difficult not to enjoy reading as Nancy strives to be her glamorous and charming self. The story is perky and an easy read for younger children because it has simple sentences while still incorporating "fancy" new words for children to add to their ever growing vocabulary.

It is important for children, even at a very young age to be themselves. In this regard Nancy is an excellent role model, who shows children that being different from the people around you is not a bad thing, it can be simply fabulous! If nothing else your child will certainly learn a thing or two about developing a keen fashion sense and how to accessorize any outfit!
