Pregnancy: Am I having a boy or a girl?

I remember when I was close to six months pregnant I came home for to visit my family and they had planned a surprise baby shower at my great aunt's house. I was excited and thrilled about the baby shower and when I got there it was beautiful. It was all done up in neutral colors since I didn't know for sure what I was having because the little one keep crossing his or her legs and rolling away and showing us his or her but on the ultrasound.

So my Great Aunt Mal decided it would be fun to guess the babies sex by doing some old wives tales. The first one that they tried out was how high or low was I carrying? Me being the difficult person I was, wasn't carry high or low so I confused then on that one. Point one to the baby in my belly. The second one they tried was a string and ring test. I kinda giggled thinking yeah my wedding ring and a string is going to tell me what I'm having. So the object to that one was to hold the string with the wedding band in front of my pregnant tummy and see which way it move. Of course the string moved in a circular pattern, which to all my relatives meant that I was having a boy.

After the ring test everyone asked me what I was going to name the boy and I looked at them all and said I'm naming her Kaitlynn Brianna. They all giggled and then asked did I have a boy name picked out and I told them no I didn't . Well that got me a round of you don't want to go into labor and have a boy and be picking a name at the last minute. My response was that deep down I knew I was having a girl and have always known from the day I knew I was pregnant. Funny thing isn't it.

When I got back home to Kansas I went to my doctors appointment and was told that I can no longer travel from then on I was high risk and now I would have get a non stress test twice a week in Kansas City and and ultrasound once a week until the baby was born and I was to come to the office once a week. So I knew sooner or later that the little bugger would be outed on whether the baby was a boy or girl.

I will say when I asked the ultrasound person if there was a sure fire way to know the sex of the child she said, yes but that it was not without risks. She proceeded to tell me that an amniocentesis would be able to tell me the sex of the child but that it has the risk of causing miscarriage and preterm labor. I knew that was definitely not for me I was already high risk as it was. The safer method that I could do was the ultrasound and since I was ordered to get them every week I had a good chance that one of these time the baby would slip up and we could find out what the baby was.

It was about a month later that I was at my non stress test and ultrasound that I found out what I was having that to a sugar cookie that I was made to eat since the baby wasn't being active for the non stress test. Let me tell you after I ate that cookie about five minutes later I had a baby in a tiny confined space bouncing off the walls of my ribs. When it came time for the ultrasound the baby had calmed down some but was still moving and shaking and making me tired from the exertion that he or she was putting forth. But since the baby couldn't remain in one place to long I was told that I was going to have a bouncing baby girl. And to think the ring told me I was having a boy. I learned from then on to always trust my instincts and the sonogram and not to rely on old wives tales.
