Yale University in 2004 mice with the most common form of Cystic Fibrosis were given curcumin, not only did the curcumin seem to correct the defect but it also slowed down the release of calcium. This allowed mutated cells to exit through calcium channels thus reducing mucus build up.
Turmeric and the fight against cancer
In tests conducted at the University of Texas, mice were injected with human breast cancer cells. Some of the mice were given the cancer drug Taxol, some curcumin, some nothing and some curcumin and Taxol. The results were published in Biochemical Pharmacology in September 2005, and they astounded the medical community. Only half the mice in the curcumin-only group and just 22% of those in the curcumin plus Taxol group had evidence of breast cancer that had spread to the lungs. But 75% of the mice that got Taxol alone and 95% of the mice given nothing developed lung tumours. This shows that curcumin can significantly reduce the spread of cancerous cells, which is great news for Drs and cancer sufferers all over the world.
This research is great news for all of the medical community, but we will do well to remember that it is still in its early stages. Still we could soon see a change to that old saying "An apple a day keeps the Dr away" to "A curry a day keeps the Dr away"
