Book marketing: Ideas for children's books

Before getting into the how and where, one simple question needs to be asked; How do children get their hands on the books they have now loved to read? Through adults, be it school teachers, librarians, parents or generally an adult in the family.

Here are a few sure ways to get your book in the right little hands:

Parents tend to buy their children whatever they like, and books, even more as it has an educational value attached to it. It is important to first make the book attractive to a child, bright colourful pictures on the cover, simple storybook titles. Once the packaging idea is appropriate for the targeted consumer, these books should strategically find themselves in the right aisle of the book store for example; it could be placed somewhere near cook books (a section mothers tend to frequent) or near the business, DIY book section (a section fathers tend to frequent). Also, it would help to place these books near the computer games aisle or where you stock DVDs aimed at children. This way, the children's books are in an area that cannot be missed by parent or child.

These days, grocery stores are a good choice for stocking children's books. Who are the primary shoppers? Mothers of course and they normally tend to take their young children with them seeing as children can't be left at home alone.

Another sure way to market books efficiently is through schools. Children spend more time at school than home. Teachers, other students can have a huge influence on a child's choices so where best to market your book than in a school library, a place where you know you get maximum exposure. Chances are that the child will go home and insist that his parents get him/her a personal copy! How's that for a win-win situation?

One last important channel for marketing children's books is through a local library. Unless things have changed drastically, children tend to go to local libraries often, whether it's after school or weekends, school holidays, but they do and these libraries offer a good way to market children's books.

Most shopping malls have recreational/amusent arcades for children. Setting up a childrens book stand/stall on weekends at these malls is also good way to market books.

Basically, the important thing to realise here is that you need to find a way to saturate the market with your childrens books using every possible channel/outlet that your target market frequents at. Over a period, through trial and error, you can measure the most effective way of marketing these books and shift all resources into that method, while still trying to find different ways to market the books.
