Time management for entrepreneurs

If you have your own business, time management is one of the most valuable skills you can have. It is essential in making sure your business is run efficiently and your time is spent wisely. Since you no longer have a boss looking over your shoulder, it can be exciting to finally take all those snack breaks, go on a shopping spree in the middle of the day, or do anything else that pops into your head. But if you don't have good time management, your business could falter quickly.

The most important thing to remember that your new business is still a job. Even if you're finally doing what you love, are in business for yourself, and feel like you have more freedom, you still have bills to pay. Your children still need to eat and the mortgage or rent still needs to be paid. In fact, with all of the startup fees, supplies and whatever else you need for your new business, you may find that you have more bills to pay than before. So this new adventure, as fun as it may be, needs to be treated like a real job. You will still have goals and projects, still need to meet deadlines, and possibly still have customer demands.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to make a schedule and stick to it. It seems much harder to slack off when you know exactly what you should be doing that day. A schedule also helps to establish a routine for your day, which can make it a lot easier to get settled into the swing of things. Once you get settled into that, it almost becomes second nature, and soon you'll see your business thriving under all of the attention.

If you are a home based entrepreneur, it is important to try and limit the number of distractions you face while you work. Many people spend a lot of time they could be working dealing with these distractions, which isn't good for the business, especially in the early stages. If you have older children at home, let them know you have certain times you have to work. The same goes for family, friends and neighbors. Make everyone aware of your schedule and let them know you have work to do. Good time management is almost unnecessary if you're having to stop working every couple of hours because your neighbor wants to stop by or your best friend wants to chat.

You also need to look at how you spend your time and what your business really needs. If you're spending a great deal of time on something, and it doesn't seem to be having much effect on the overall business, consider dropping it, or at least reducing the amount of time you spend on it. If it's all of the little things that are taking up the majority of your time, consider getting some help. If you have kids old enough, or a spouse, ask if they can do the simple stuff, like reorganizing supplies, or stuffing envelopes. It's surprising how much time little things like this can take, and that's all time you could be spending building your network or perfecting your product.

Good time management is one of the most important assets an entrepreneur can have, as it could make a difference in whether your business succeeds or fails. These are just a few ways to make better use of your time, which will hopefully give you enough to see your business flourish.
