Pedigree pets: Are they worth the cost?

About a year and a half ago I started looking to get a puppy for the family. I was so worried about finding the right place to get my puppy from and I went back and forth wondering whether to purchase from a Breeder or to purchase from pet store. Then I began thinking that I heard a lot of pet stores purchase their puppies from puppy mills and I wanted a quality puppy with a health certificate and the AKC papers if I was going to be spending a lot of money. So I did some reasearch on and found out that there are many kids of breeders they range from

Puppy mills , Backyard Breeders, Pet Store, and Flea Markets.

Puppy mills are run by people who are more interested in money and how well the female dog they have will breed. They buy one male puppy that is AKC and one female puppy that is AKC and they sell to pet stores and advertise in a pet magazine or classified or the Internet. Puppy mills do not show their dogs because it costs money, they don't usually give their pet health care and the puppies don't receive a vet check and are usually in poor health and they temperament is unknown in the dog. Puppy mill puppies are usually all around in poor quality and they usually deliver the puppies so that their conditions are not seen by the person buying them.

Backyard Breeders are like a puppy mill and also have AKC puppies that are in poor quality. Most Backyard breeders start out with the best intentions because they think that their dog should experience motherhood at least one and they may ask their vet to help them find an AKC registered dog to breed their AKC registered dog with. Some Backyard Breeders also just breed their dogs once or twice for the extra money. What is bad about this is that they don't get the genetic testing done to make sure their are no genetic problems and this just adds to the problem of surplus pets. On top of this they advertise in the local papers and may or may not have pups with good temperaments.

Pet Stores usually buy from Puppy mills and Backyard Breeders which I have gone over the reasons these places shouldn't be purchase from. I want to stress that no reputable breeder would ever sell to Pet Store and that also selling to a Pet Store is against the wriiten code of ethics in most breed clubs. So remember this NO BREEDER would ever ever sell their AKC pure bred puppies to a Pet Store. Buying from a Pet Store only heightens the demand for more Pet Store puppies.

Flea Markets also a place where no reputable breeder would sell their puppies. This is a place where Puppy mills and Backyard breeders can sell their over load of puppies. Again these puppies may not be in the best of health and may or may not be of good temperament.

After learning all of this I went to reputable breeders who show their dogs and allow you to see their Kennels and have purchase agreements. Reputable breeders have their animals genetic tested and can show you their pedigree of their dogs lines. The also offer a one year genetic warranty on their puppies and some have extensive applications that you have to go through. But you are guaranteed a dog that is healthy and is breed for a good temperament. So for me the one thousand dollars I paid for my Siberian Husky is well worth it.
