The pros and cons of working from home

Working from home definitely has its advantages and to prove it, Undress for Success, a wonderful resource for anyone that is trying to find a legitimate telecommuting position and avoid getting scammed, they conducted over 250 studies on telecommuting.

Dozens of enthusiasts and challengers alike, including some of the top telework researchers, venture capitalists, who support this work model, Fortune 500 executives, virtual employers, executives from freelance job boards such as Elance as well as executives from more traditional job boards such as Monster and Career Builder and dozens of home-based telecommuters from various professions.

Some of the pros that the studies revealed are:

Reclaim jobs that were lost to offshore

Create job opportunities for disabled and/or at home caregivers

No more traffic jams

Save on gas

Save employees money on commuting, daycare and eldercare costs

Increase productivity

Improve family life

Reduces stress, illness and injury for employee

Save company money on office supplies and real estate

Reduces unscheduled absences

Expands the talent pool

Reduces geographic boundaries

Some of the cons that the studies revealed are:

Management Mistrust

Employee isolation

Data security

Need to work well unsupervised

Need quiet are such as home office to work during scheduled hours

Telecommuting is not a replacement for daycare or eldercare

Co-workers may become jealous

Costs

Employment Law and OSHA Concerns

Local Zoning Issues

I have only listed some of the pros and as you can see they outweigh the cons, but deciding to take that step and telecommute and work from home does take a commitment. It is not easy and you will have to be a dedicated, hard worker just as if you were to travel in to the office each day, the only difference is the office is in your home.

Sometimes, once people actually get the chance to give it a try, they decide that working from home is not really for them. Before you give up your fulltime job, be sure to think out all your options. You may even try a part time position at home first, just to test out.

With all the competition at there today, once you are lucky enough to land that full time job from home, be sure to value it and do the best you can because even though once you "walk the walk" you may decide it just isn't what you expected, be sure to take a break and write a list of why you wanted to work from home in the first place.
