Thoughts on thankfulness

by Nann

We had just got our dog who was just a puppy (4mnths). Of course when you get a new little puppy it's like having a toddler. You have the tote bag (for treats, toys and bribes) and the blanket (to cover the last attempt at potty training), water bowl, food bowl, carrier for transport in and out of car, leash (a meager token of power) and a small resemblance of sanity. We start our day by getting ready to go run some errands for Thanksgiving. My husband is busy gathering the "puppy" who is a very spunky chocolate lab to get in the car. He has his list in hand, checking things off as he puts them one by one in the car, blanket, toys, water bowl, etc and then puppy - all is good. Next he has his personel entourage of stuff, newspaper (to read and train puppy), cell phone, coat, you get the ideaand last but not least his wife. As I am watching this I am reminded of the cartoon "family circle" and the caption underneath would say "man's best friend". So, we are going down the road and my husband stops for a squirrel dashing across the street, as we screech to a halt something projects in front of the car thumping down the hood. What? WAS THAT! We jump out, the squirrel is chattering at us from the OTHER side of the road and my husbands' WALLET is lying on the ground, OMG! We both look at each other dumbfounded- and simultaneously say, "it must have been LEFT on the hood of the car while loading the PUPPY"! We jump back in the car and take off, thanking God for small critters and watching over us. Most Thanksgivings we spend with our extended family. So, our contribution is usually a side item to bring for the feast! Our last stop for the day is the grocery store. So, of course I have my LIST and strategy to get in & out with little to no incident involved. As I am getting back into the car with my bag of goodies, I notice something quite large and white in a cart, lone in the parking lot with no cars around. I tell my husband to wait I got to check out something and yes, you guessd it - it was a 20LB TURKEY. No one around to claim it, just abandoned, left behind I reasoned. You can't return it back to the grocery store it can't be resold, right? So, I heft it over and put in the back with the puppy's stuff. My husband and I just look at each other and start laughing at how this day began and ended with such a funny series of coincidences. I said "you know someone has been looking out for us today. A squirrel chased after a nut across our path so you would not lose your wallet and your mind, then, I find a abandoned 20lb turkey by someone who probably was putting the toddler in the car seat while packing in the groceries and trying to dig in her purse for the cell phone that was ringing insanely as the kids were digging out the treats in the bags and fighting over who was going to get the last gummy worm!" RIGHT! My husband and I had much to be thankful for that Thanksgiving and we always use this story as a reference when we need a good chuckle.
