Creative inspiration: Where do our ideas come from?

for them to inhabit, a coherent explanation of what they are doing and why.

Creativity is like riding a bicycle. You fall off initially and twenty years later you're doing 150mph on a Harley Davidson. It takes practice, it takes confidence, and you need to position yourself in environments which respect your ability and your need to ask questions, to have doubts, and to explore uncertainty.

Our ideas come from within our heads. Sometimes we get creative when sitting doggedly looking at a writing problem, sometimes we wake up having just dreamed the solution.

Great scientists come up with scientific breakthroughs in their workplaces and in their sleep - but they have put in thousands of hours of work learning and understanding their science before they are in a position to have the revolutionary insight.

As a writer, your creative ideas might occur in a flash, they might emerge over several days or weeks - I've written a published short story in an afternoon, I've spent months over others aware that something wasn't quite right, that the story just didn't ring true.

But I've put in thousands of hours reading stories, watching films, looking at life, not to mention a childhood playing with toy soldiers and playing games and constantly exercising that story telling, inventive, and questioning mind.
