My home is full of African violets. I think they are one of the easiest and most beautiful houseplants to grow. African violets are easy to find in stores and inexpensive to buy. Anyone can grow them following these simple tips.

Pots: When you bring a violet home, be sure to plant it into a new pot. The pots they come in from the store are not conducive to growing beautiful plants. Look for pots made especially for growing violets. These are often shorter than other pots.

Soil: There is soil specifically made for African violets. If this is not found in your area, recipes to make your own soils are readily available.

Light: Violets do not like harsh light. Too much light can cause the leaves to brown and die. A window facing to the east or north is best. These provide indirect light that is not too strong for the plant. If the plants receive too little light, they may not flower. If you do not have an appropriate window, use artificial lights available in most gardening centers.

Flowers: Remove dead flowers right away in order to encourage more to grow. Violet flowers come in a variety of colors and styles and can last a long time on the plant.

Water: You should use lukewarm or room temperature water. Fill a container and leave it for several hours or overnight before using. This allows the temperature to regulate and gives time for the chemicals used in drinking water to dissipate. When you are done watering, fill the container in preparation for the next time.

Watering: Violets do not like to be watered from the top. Water on leaves can cause them to discolor. When watering violets, place the plant into a saucer or tray that will hold water. Fill the saucer or tray with water until well above the bottom of the plant dish. Leave the plants in for an hour or two, and then place them back into their window.

Violets also do not like to be over watered. Check the soil before watering. If it is still damp, do not water. Wait until the soil is dry and crumbling before you water again.

Rooting: After you are successfully growing violets it is very easy to get more. Simply cut off a leaf along with a good length of stem. Place this into a mixture of vermiculite or simply into a cup filled with water. Keep the cutting moist until roots form and then plant. Purchase soil made for violets or mix your own.

Following these simple tips will allow anyone to grow beautiful violets. Soon, your windows will be full of flowers and your friends and family will be asking you for tips on how to grow their own plants.
