Memoirs: Uncovering a money-related secret in my marriage

I had just come home from my vacation to see my family and I found a stranger in my living room! Ok, so he wasn't a stranger but he might as well been. Then I put down my bag and say.

"Honey, I'm home."

With that I see that my husband has come out of the kitchen and politely introduces me and my close family friend, Sonny, to his brother Jan. From this point I find out that Jan is now going to be staying with us for an undetermined amount of time and that he hasn't any money and no job. Well that would be ok if it wasn't for the fact that I'm over approximately 6 months pregnant and we're bearly having enough money to live off of ourselves. But politely I say Hi and smile and tell it's nice to finally meet him. Well that day was spent talking and getting everyone off to know everyone.

The next day I take my family friend, Sonny, to the greyhound bus station and send him back to Maryland with a hug and a promise to visit when the baby is born. So I leave with tears in my eyes and go home. I decide to stop quickly at the ATM and grab twenty for gas and some food, as I go to pull the money out I get a slip saying transaction denied and see that we are a $150 in the hole.

Shocked I looked at the statement knowing that I didn't even break my travel budget and that I should have had money left over I go home to question my husband. When I get there I find a case of beer and my brother-in-law and my husband sitting there drinking. I politely ask my husband to come and talk with me and found out that he went over the amount I left for him to work with. Frustrated I tell him that we have no money and that remember the post only allows visitors for no longer than a month and still they needed notified by him so that we don't lose housing. I go into the house and I call work for my schedule. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse I get the phone bill and it's $498. Mouth dropping to the floor I see charges to a bunch of 900 numbers that I know I didn't call. Great ! Just Great!

So I grab the phone bill walk over to my husband, Jesse, and ask what the charges are and he replies he didn't do it. Ok next stop is arguing with the phone company. I call them and they say that the charges were made at my house from my line. I tell them that they weren't my charges since I could prove I was at work and I told them that my husband wasn't the one because he said he was at work. So they told me that there was a scam going around and that I should contact the post police and have them do an investigation.

Upon calling the post police they transferred me to their special unit and we went in got interviewed and they started working on it. A couple of days later we were called in together reinterviewed and then left. But I think that we were home for about an hour when the special investigative unit called and asked if my husband could come down and speak with them in private. I had to go to work soon so I went with him and waited in the car.

An hour later he comes out of there and I see this look on his face, he gets in and says nothing. I start the car and say nothing. Out of the blue he says I did it. I turn and say, " What!". I tell him that if he just would have told me in the first place we would have talked about it and gone from there not went through this whole ordeal. We get to my work and he says to me that he's tired and drained and again he loves me but doesn't want the responsibility of a family and a wife. Frustrated I tell him it's a little late for that and get out and tell him we'll talk when I get home. This was just the tip on the iceberg to our failing marriage and as things worse it ended.
