No, our politicians should not be held on a higher moral standard than each one of us, however, they should not be held on a lower moral standard than each one of us is held either. Does it really matter what kind of work we do as long as we do it with honesty, integrity, and dedication? We all serve each other in some way in this world, and we should all be held to the same moral standards regardless of whether we are in the political, medical, legal, food, sanitation or any other field that makes our world survive. At the same time those in public office should follow the same guidelines as every other worker in society does. Just as other professions have a limit on how much we are allowed to receive in gifts, tips and/or other means of having people express their thankfulness to us for the jobs we perform, our politicians should have to live by the same rules as the rest of us do.
Each and every one of us can and does make a difference in the world we live in. The question is do we make a good difference or a bad one. Each and every one of us has an important job to do and we should all do it in the best way we can, with respect and responsibility to ourselves and to our fellow man.
Every one of us should also face the same penalties if we fail to do our jobs properly. We should be warned before we start any position, that if we are dishonest we will be fired if we break the rules. If accused, we should be given a chance to explain and if the explanation is not satisfactory then we should be fired or asked to resign. There should not be a different set of rules for any profession regardless of the profession of the financial status of any individual. We should all have the same rules to follow and be held to the same punishments. It a politician can resign to save his/her pension, then people from every profession should be given the same option.
No one in any field should get away with being dishonest, killing someone, abusing others or mistreating people because they have wealth; are considered to have a better educated; or know the right people to fix or hide their transgressions. No profession should be considered too menial or too important when it concerns the welfare of the people being served.
Politicians are no different than any other profession and when they do not do their job properly they are hurting all the people who depend on their doing the job well. Every one of them can become goats or unsung heroes by doing their jobs without or
