Ever since that fateful poker game in Hawaii, when the Earl of Sandwich asked for meat to be brought to him in between two slices of bread, the world has been fundamentally changed for the better. The sandwich is perhaps king in the pantheon of cross culture foods. No matter where you were born, into whatever class, you have seen if not eaten a sandwich.
The variety that is offered is this very simple formula allows for permutations upon permutations. Bread, meats, cheeses, condiments and topping allow for flavor combinations possibly in only this culinary medium. Of course there is also added exponent of whether the sandwich is hot or cold.
Everyone's sandwich preferences are unique, not only to the person, but that person's setting, mood and intentions, as well as other variables.
Is it a hot or cold day? Do you want a filling meal or just a snack? Are you sad and want comfort food or are you celebrating and desire something elating? Feeling like getting fancy or is the basic staple good for now? Are you hungry now? Are you driving? What time of day is it? These are all questions and factors that we answer when stepping up to the counter.
As for my preferences I have several as my ever expanding waste line will show.
Chicken sad with bacon on white toast:
No I don't want you to hold the chicken salad, I want it piled high. This sandwich is best made in a diner; it is my go to when I am a little hungry bit not starving. It is a satisfying sandwich but won't leave you feeling like a bomb hit your stomach, perfect for eating light.
Bacon, 2 eggs scrambled and American cheese on a roll:
This is the way to start a day on the go. I would get this once a week when I commuted to Manhattan. Why once a week? I don't feel like having a heart attack at 45. I still get it on the occasion I have to get up and go somewhere early.
The Reuben: It is a Reuben, enough said.
Roast beef or turkey on a hero with mayo and salt and pepper: a fantastic stand-by, always satisfying and good for driving.
Now the next 2 sandwiches are my favorites:
#2 Breaded chicken cutlet with American cheese, bacon on a hero with mayo and honey mustard served warm: I love this sandwich and it is second only to one other. I don't know how I fell upon this combination, but it just works for me and I urge you to give it a try.
Ok so a came upon my favorite sandwich one day when I wanted to marry two sandwich loved: Italian heroes and breaded chicken cutlets.
This was the result:
#1 Breaded chicken cutlet with melted mozzarella and provolone on a garlic bread hero topped with sweet red roasted peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Italian dressing.
This is not for the weak of heart. It is so filling that I have on occasion eaten one half and saved the rest for later. This sandwich will fill you and leave a huge smile on your face.
Enjoy!
