A neighbor is not necessarily somebody who lives in your street, but traditionally the term has been used to indicate one's fellow human being. When such neighbors face difficult times, especially economically, we may feel a moral obligation to help, but worry that any such offer might be found insulting. So, we need to find ways of offering such help which do not smack of charity or pity. You do not even have to offer financial help. Below are a few suggestions.
One thing many people with money worries face is a great deal of stress. It has been very enticing for people just lately to use credit as a means of getting out of debt. Unfortunately for the majority, this has resulted in further debt and even greater worry. One way to alleviate their feelings of stress might be to pay them a visit. By tactfully relating your own experiences, you may encourage them to open up and share their fears. This will do much to bring relief to your neighbor.
If your neighbor is experiencing a lot of worry over debts, they may feel less inclined to look after themselves as well as they might usually and preparing meals may not be such a priority for them. Inviting them to dinner once in a while will not only make them feel better, it will also take some of the sting out of rising grocery costs.
You may notice a neighbor making their way to the bust stop on their way to work. Your neighbour works in town and so do you. Casually, offer your neighbor a lift as you drive by. Even if you did this once in a while, you may help to save them money on their travel costs. A nice friendly chat with a friend will make for a nice start to the morning for you both.
Just because your friend or neighbor is experiencing financial difficulties, it does not mean to say that they cannot enjoy recreational activities. Granted, money may pose certain of restrictions, but not every day out has to cost a fortune. An afternoon spent at the park, feeding the ducks, or a wander through a museum. Often, there are places to eat out rather inexpensively. It could be just what your neighbor needs to buoy them up a bit.
All in all, one does not have to offer such unsightly charity as writing out a check, but rather, one can be charitable in many varied ways. A good friend is worth a lot in this world and your neighbor is sure to remember all that you did for them. After all, you never know when you might need your neighbor.
