Basic bowling rules

by Melissa Gilbert

Created on: March 21, 2009

Bowling is a game that is enjoyed by people of all ages. It has one objective and that is to throw the ball down the bowling alley to where the pins are and get a strike. You say that is real easy; not always.

The rules to the game are probably one of the easiest out there, but let's talk about some of the equipment that you need in order to play the game. First off, you obviously need to find a bowling alley. You need a bowling ball and bowling shoes, both of which you can get at the bowling alley. When you do go to the bowling alley, you will have to rent the shoes though, but they usually have bowling balls all throughout the bowling alley that you can use. Like bowling shoes, bowling balls do range in size. I believe the lightest you can find is six pounds. When I do bowl, I have my own ball and I believe it is nine pounds.

If you are just beginning with bowling, it really is a great idea to use the bowling balls available at the bowling alley, but as you start bowling more often, it is a great investment that you go and buy yourself your own bowling ball as it is well worth the money and the balls typically can last a long time. They do range in what materials they are made out of but they all do one thing; let you bowl.

Now that we have the equipment laid out in front of you here, let's now move onto the bowling lane to where you are bowling. The first thing you do when you go to the area to go and bowl is to place the ball on the carrier that holds the balls by each set of lanes. This is where the ball returns after you knock over the pins with the ball.

Now the area where the ball return area is, is what I am going to call the approach area as that is basically what it is. Like any game there is etiquette. Bowling is no different. People whom are new to the game have no understanding of this. You never bowl at the exact same time as the person on the next lane right next to you as the lanes can break down due to that. So for the etiquette part of this, when you do get on the approach area, always let the person on the left lane go first and then you can go. If there is no one on the next lane, then you do not have anything to worry about.

Putting your fingers in the ball is really easy. There are three holes; 2 on the top where you put your ring finger and the finger next to it and where your thumb is placed below it. At first when you bowl, it may feel weird, but you will get used to it.

So now that you have your fingers in the ball you are now ready to
