Poetry: As time goes on

by Peter W. Robinson

Created on: March 21, 2009

We play out our hands with reckless intent

no love between lovers-the message is sent

Our soul's desperate yearnings makes barely a sound

The times we hurt most we are mostly alone...

.

Before we acknowledge the wheel has turned

and can't recall feelings that once for we burned

resentments we harbor inhibite us now

too bent by the past to appreciate how

.

As time's steely fingers claw life from our blood

we bend our backs double-can't turn back the flood

the clear distant recall of days long since passed

a heart's shattered longings are sure built to last

.

Ask yourself why we can't move from this place

we both are a product of time's steady pace

and 'reason' diminishes chances for love

too late in the contest to rise up above

.

(But) what if I held you throughout the night

we watching together as night kisses light

would we, could we reach some small part of you

that wasn't damaged; was not black or blue?

.
