Poetry: Motherhood

Bloated like a gas balloon
nauseous from dawn 'til noon
prone to unexpected tears
joyous laughter, hidden fears

Pangs and twinges, its begun
broken waters freely run
heaving breath, gripping tight
relax, now push with all your might

Listen for that little cry
relief, exhaustion, let out a sigh
tiny bundle held to chest
melting moment, time to rest

Form a bond like none before

sleep deprivation, pace the floor
angelic face now fast asleep
midnight feeding schedules to keep

A smile that lights the darkest day
sweeps those night time blues away
gurgle, dribble, burp and giggle
in the bath to splash and wriggle

On hands and knees across the room
then up on two feet zoom zoom zoom
running, grabbing all in sight
straight in the mouth, give mum a fright

Grubby finger prints on walls
toys strewn up and down the halls
energy without an end
kiss a graze to help it mend

Measurements marked on a chart
off to school they soon depart
goodness me you're growing fast
in a flash the years fly past

Teenage angst, a new hairdo
"clean that room" "No! I don't want to"
dating, lost love, hearts are broken
yell, rebel, harsh words spoken

Drugs and alcohol and cars
parties, nightclubs, seedy bars
find your way my precious one
life for you has just begun

A job, true love, let's settle down
wedding bells, a beautiful gown
away on a romantic honeymoon
thoughts of grandkids coming soon

Through all the happy times and tears
the hopes and dreams, the pain and fears
we love them like no other could
a love that's born with motherhood...
