When Buying a new laptop the first thing you need to think of is your budget. So You set your budget and try to stick to it. Next you will need to do a price comparison at your local stores and online. On the day you decide to buy your laptop make sure it is not the first one you see and say who that is pretty. You want to look at the features of each one.
Most laptops today are running Windows Vista in the stores. Unless you go to an Apple Store. Either way you want to make sure it has enough memory first of all. A good memory meaning at least 4GB(gigabyte) of memory. Running different applications take up a good bit of resources so it has to be a good size of memory that comes with the laptop. You want it to come with the laptop and not you having to go out and buy extra memory too.

The next feature you should look out for is hard drive space. It really depends on how much space you need. If you don't do much on your laptop 160GB is fine. But if you are a download king or queen you will need more space. So a good amount of space is a 300GB of space. If you can get larger do so. When it comes to doing websites, graphics, and gaming; you will need a good amount of space and memory.

Not just that you will need a good wi-fi. The features on that have to be good too. If your laptop does not match the router specification you already have then you will end up buying a new router as well. But if you already have a new router then you're fine. The only thing you will have to check for is that it supports (802.11a,b,g and n) in case you want to go wireless networking. You will want to be prepared so you will get access in hot spots as well. If you are planning on going wireless make sure your router is up today and that you have a good firewall in it. If you are on dial up make sure it has a rj-11 jack on it.
Now a days, most people pick a good size display screen. The average display is 15.4in.. If you want bigger it is up to you. But do remember you have to carry it around so you do not want your laptop to heavy either. You also want to make sure it has a good graphics card and a good processor to push all the memory and graphics. Believe me if you are a gamer it is going to come in handy to have a good graphics card. As well as a good processor. But like I said before the memory is one of the most important things watch out for.

You also, want to make sure it has enough usb ports. 2 usb ports is not enough. Now go and buy your new laptop. You have all the basic specifications on "how to buy a laptop".
